Blog Assignment Number Three Ladies and Gentlemen!!!!!

Thu, July 08, 2010 - 12:23AM 0 Comments

 The organization of Kids Horizons by Air Canada is mainly focused on the health of Canadian youth, getting rid of child poverty, and granting wishes of seriously ill children. Kids Horizons does many things for kids, but the greatest thing they do is giving them back their childhood.

Since this is a flight company, they fly children so they can get the medical attention they need. If the child cannot get the right treatments at any nearby or local hospital, this organization flies them so they can get the right attention. Take Nicholas Maheux for example. He was given an honourary pilot certificate by Kids Horizons, and was flown from his home town of Bagotville Quebec, to Montreal 15 times to seek the right medical attention to over come leukemia. To read more about his story, click here------> http://www.aircanada.com/en/about/community/kids/index.html

Free the Children is one of the charities that Kids Horizons helps out with. By collecting donations at airports and on the Air Canada flights, Kids Horizons is a big help to Free the Children. One of the biggest ways though, is by people donating their aeroplan miles. By people donating millions( and I mean MILLIONS) of these aeroplan miles, they have managed to minimize travel expenses for the Free the Children staff to go all over Canada. From there, the staff have created leadership programs in schools to show youth how "kids can teach kids" which is how Free The Children started.

In an interview with Victor from Free the Children, the Interviewer asked;

Q: Free The Children has some remarkable supporters in its work to ensure it is a strong organization. Can you tell us about some of these partners?

A:

Free The Children works with a great team, both inside and outside the office, who help to makes its work possible. For example, the organization receives pro bono legal services from Torys LLP, one of Canada’s (and North America’s) most respected law firms. Their lawyers are so helpful and always only a phone call away, ready to help with any question, large or small. Free The Children has also received countless hours of free consulting services from teams at Deloitte as well as outside specialized firms in the areas of technology, communications, monitoring and evaluation of projects and financial systems.

Also, many of our corporate partners make a huge difference to help offset costs. For example, Air Canada Kids’ Horizons Foundation helps to provide complementary flights for our staff to many locations where we work overseas. We could not do it without this remarkable network of people and companies who care.

Interview with Victor here---> http://www.freethechildren.com/aboutus/financials/qa/

Some of the benefits that Free the Children Receive;

 -help keeping costs low for flights

-helping staff of Free the Children reach their goals

-Helping raise awareness of Free the Children

Benefits for Air Canada;

-the good feeling of helping with Charity

-having more people take their flights

-being able to help

Have any aeroplan miles? If you are willing to donate them today and help save childrens lives by giving them proper medical care, food, clean water, and schools, please go to http://www.aircanada.com/en/about/community/kids/index.html You can be the difference that you want to see in tomorow. Poverty will end one day, and by giving a child their childhood, you can put a smile on their face and make them ealize that the world is not that bad. Together, we can make a childs dreams come true.

Blog Assignment Number Twoooo!!!

It's hard to move somewhere new and show everyone who you are. When Kaitlan moved to Souris, she didn't know who to be friends with or what to wear, or what the even say or do. This is what my TV show would be about.

Watch Kaitlan from the year 2010 struggle with Graduating, creating Prom, going to University and compete for Miss Teen Canada World. Kaitlan Misses her old town, Altona Manitoba, and has constant flashbacks of how things used to be. Follow Kaitlan as she proves to everyone that she is not like the other teenagers from Souris and how different she really is. Unlike the other teenagers, she doesn't like drinking or doing drugs. She prefers simpler things, like working, spending time with family, and being creative.

Come see how she tranforms from a young emo teen to a blonde flower. All the bumps and hilarious concepts along the way will keep you on the edges on your seats as you follow her on her journey. Her desicions between right and wrong or which path to take will have you addicted to this. Laugh as she attempts to create Prom and as she decorates the Hall in space ships and aliens. At the end of Prom, watch how she gets mad when people ruin all her hard work and end up ripping the aliens and wearing them. See her graduation, when she graduates with the most credits Souris School has seen and watch her enter the Provincial Pageant.

See as she looks a apartments and gets ready for the big step of University. Watch her buy all her furniture from Finesse and decorate her apartment. She says goodbye to her old Souris life and begin a new one in Brandon.

Her struggles are in this as well. When all the girls take a stand against her, see her falter and wonder if she should move back to her old town, or be strong and stand up for herself. See how strong willed she is and how she sticks to something and sees it through.

Laugh as she pesters her mom and step dad about getting a hedge hog. She really wants one, and finds one. This hedgehog is in a bad home, does she suprise her parents and take the hedgehog home? It breaks her heart to leave such a creature in a place. Watch as her hedgehog, Snortles, becomes her best friend and driving partner to work every day.

Kaitlan has to prove everyone wrong. She has to show everyone that she is different in a good way and can make a difference in peoples lives. She may not dance or figure skate anymore, but her dedication shows in every aspect of her life. People are stars; Some shine brighter than others, but we all light up the sky.

Blog Assignment 1

"Souris? Where's Souris?" That is what I often hear when I tell people where I am from. It is a small town that has recently hit a population of 2000 people. From such a small place, you don't expect it to offer as much as it does. It is a place where some one can really be themself. We have some very different people here, and no one is turned away. We are about 10-15 minutes off of Highway One. Lets see if you can find it there; it is sort of by the red leaf on the left? Yeah, thas where I live now.

So what is there to do in this small town? LOTS!!!!  Lets talk peacocks for a second here. They are in trees, on roads, one even walked into the local grocery store!!! We have a bird sanctuary here and peacocks are one of the many types of birds that live here. We also have hundreds and hundreds of Canada Geese that migrate here every year. I love watching their arrows fly above me. Visit our Peacocks We also have these 4 ducks down in the park that I usually feed. It's getting kind of bad though, because they recognize my car and come running across the road expecting me to feed them!!! I'm scared that they are going to get hit one of these days!!! They are sort of like children, haha. They just eat right out of your hand too!!! They are crazy,  but I love my posse of four ducks!!!

We also have a butterfly museum. I went in it for the first time last year and there are so many!!! Walls upon walls of butterflies of all shapes and colours!!! You can't help but feel like you're in a jungle with these preserved creatures!!! My friend used to work a this museum, and just loved spending time looking at them. He is some how related to the man that captured and recorded all these butterflies. There are over 5000 butterflies in that one room. It is beautiful.

The famous swinging bridge, one of Manitoba's "must see" sights. It is really long and by the end, your calves burn. If you start jumping on it, you might get yelled at because this bridge SWINGS. I mean, it really swings!!! It's not dangerous though, we have people looking after the bridge and making sure it is in good working condition. A lot of people that are scared of heights, don't really like going on it. Like my mom for instance, I love jumping on this bridge because it is scary and you could easily fall in. My mom is scared of heights and often frowns upon on jumping when she is on the bridge. She makes me go across first, and when I am at the other end she crosses. I like to jump on it... This bridge was built in 1904 and is 582 feet long. It is a really long bridge.

What else to say about Souris? We have some very original buildings, such as the Plum which is the oldest building in Souris. It is a purple church. The oldest house is still occupied in Souris by my boyfriend's family. It has so many rooms!! There are walls every where!!! We also have a 500 year old oak tree and a looking tower where you can see all of Souris. Souris is a very pretty town that will take you back in time with the original buildings and the old bridge. Souris has a certain beauty about it that I love. Now, you won't be one of the people that ask me what or where Souris is, because you now know.

Miss Teen Who?

Fri, July 02, 2010 - 9:42AM 0 Comments

Originally, I was from a small Mennonite town called Altona. I lived there for 16 years and went to all four of the schools there. I finished my last two years of school where i currently reside, Souris. Now both of these places are in Manitoba and I can't decide which I liked better. In Altona, I had a lot of friends, but in Souris, you're kind of... free? No one really cares here to put it simply. I have done many things here such as played with peacocks, jumped off the tire swing into the river, jumped off the bridge into the river, gone off roading, played with deer, the possibilities are endless.

I am very adventurous. I have ventured behind a waterfall with my brother and step-brother, gone bungee jumping, and I hope to go sky-diving soon!!! I believe in living life to the fullest and taking every chance you can get. Life is an adventure, and I don't plan on wasting it. I love an adrenaline rush and I love heights. I'm different in that way I guess, haha.

I love travelling. I have been to Toronto, Dominican Republic, and all the way to the West side of Canada. I love seeing the world. I want to go to Europe and see the art, and then go to South America and travel the perimeter and see all the Inca and Aztec villages. I'm scared of the bugs but I plan on bringing a LOT of OFF!!! I want to go to Australia and see the kangaroos and I would love to go see pats of Africa. Seeing the world is my dream and I want to set foot in every ocean.

YAY!!!

Sat, June 19, 2010 - 8:13PM 0 Comments

SOOOOOO I've been SUPER busy lately that I haven't been on here in so long!!! AHHHH!!!! So I just finished high school as of 3 minutes ago and I am kinda really excited about it. But ANYWAYSSSSS.....

So I had a fundraising carwash which didn't go so well because we were rained out. We had signs and hoses and everything but the rain just poured on our parade. I had a fundraising social which wasn't bad at all. Everyone had a good time and was dressed in black and white for my Black and White Affair!!!! It was cool because I stood out in my hot pink dress=) That paid for my Pageant Dress(YAY!!!) which I bought this last week. It's SOOOOO pretty!!! And it was my size too and NO ALTERATIONS!!! That's so RARE for me!!!! It's like it was made for me!!! I love it!!! My silver shoes from the provincial pageant go beautifully with it!!!

Today I was sunburned and I have A MILLION new freckles on my face!!!(I get freckles on my face in the summer, then they fade in winter, weird huh?) I volunteered with the MS Society again and I was on a golf course ALL day for Hit a Ball for MS. I raised over $675 for MS and I`m really excited about it!!!! No one won the Hole in One Vegas trip for two but 13 people won a sleeve of golf balls for getting on the green on their first shot!!!

Channing and I also face painted at the Dreams for Kids Carnival!!! It was pretty cool. My specialty was Spiderman, no big deal or anything. Maybe that should be my talent for the pageantÉ oh, my question mark button doesnèt work now. When you see this É that is supposed to be a question mark. But that was a joke about face painting Spiderman as my talent.

I had a reading at the Souris Library for kids!! They were so excited!!! I read my two favorite childhood stories, Green Eggs and Ham, and Love You Forever. I made monkey tails for the kids as well which are healthy and delicious!!! They loved them and a little girl named Leah was SO excited to meet me!!! She kept asking about my tiara and telling me about hers at home!!! She was ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!

I would chat some more, but my hedge hog is running away!!!! Till then!!!

Road Trip!

Tue, May 18, 2010 - 9:51PM 0 Comments

Hey! No, not an ACTUAL road trip, but a road trip to a healthy lifestyle!!! Channing and I went to the Brandon mall today and handed out goodie bags that had frisbees, odometers, and some information on how YOU can live a healthier life!!!! I found out i have SUPER low blood pressure (100/58, YIKES!!!) but it was super cool!!!

In my last blog, I didn't explain myself too much because I didn't(and still don't) totally know how to work this thing!!! But I'll start from the beginning

I'm graduating this year!! Super exciting! Going to Brandon University next year to study English and Education!!!(I hope to become an English teacher some day!!)

My favorite cartoon is Roadrunner. Totally retro, I know. But before I go to work, I usually try to get my fill of Roadrunner before I go!!!

Favorite colour? Most definetly purple. It's only been that way since I was in grade 10.

My Platform for the Pageant is the MS Society. My grandma passed away from MS complications and she was the one that encouraged me to do this pageant. I miss her soooo much and will never forget her!!!

I have a pet. She's a hedgehog and her name is Snortles. She's 10 weeks old now, and SO cute!!! She was sick this morning though!!! She was cold and when they get cold, they can die. So I laid under a quilt with her and a heating pad on a day where the weather was +29. You can't say that that's not love!!!!

My foot is still black and blue and swollen from the horse though!!! Wearing heels just made it worse today!!! But my shoes were really cute, but now all I'm thinking is OWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!

Well, I am off to bed. It's 12 am and I need to sleep!!!

xxx Kaitlan

Crowning

Sat, May 15, 2010 - 3:33PM 0 Comments

Hello!!!

Wow this has been such an amazing experience!!! Since crowning I've been able to do so much! I first started off with being in the Brandon Sun with Channing, and then I was in the Souris Plaindealer. I was also able to raise the MS flag with the MS Society and be there when the Mayor signed the proclomation declaring May be MS month. Seeing all the smiles really made me happy. On Tuesday, May 18, Channing and I will be in the Brandon Mall promoting healthy lifestyle choices. This event is called "Road Trip." Right now I have to ice my foot because a horse stepped on it.... See you later!!!
